The longer I work as a fashion model photographer, the more questions I get that keep coming over and over again. One such is Do I have a face for teen modeling? Well, teenage models come in all shapes and sizes so hopefully you’ll find a niche that fits your look.

If you find yourself 5′4″ instead of having that tall, sleek look of a runway model and, you have a knack for giving expressions without reservations, then teen commercial modeling might be just the ticket for a job in the entertainment industry.

Many young models work in this sector and find it very fulfilling. The face is important but you don’t have to have an “America’s Next Top Model” look to get jobs.

Teen Beauty Modeling

If you are one of the lucky girls with a flawless complexion, you may decide to become a teen beauty model. Don’t confuse this with glamour models as you really should be older to start thinking about this field.

Stay in Shape for Teenage Modeling

One tip, no matter what type teen model job you’re after, keep your body and mind in shape by eating healthy foods and exercise daily. Drink plenty of water and DO NOT USE alcohol or drugs.

Hope this post helps open your alternatives in teen modeling and that you’ll take the first steps in pursuing your dream.

In your hurry to become a teen model you could have missed a couple of things.

For instance, where to you look for modeling agencies who need your particular look? What do you do when a casting call for teen models is available?

These are valid questions for young guys and girl models.

You might have to do a lot of contacting to find cast calls for teenage models so, don’t be discouraged. Remember that most of the famous models like Tyra Banks and Cindy Crawford went through rejection before they reached superstar status, or even before they began to get modleing jobs period.

Searching for Open Casting Calls For Teens

One of the quickest and  easiest ways to find open casting calls free for teen models is through acting or modeling web sites. Also, you can check with blogs that allow producers, scouts and studios to upload their open call info.

A word of caution: Be sure your mom or dad is involved in every step of your teen moeling career and never meet anyone alone. Take someone with you to all interviews or photo shoots.

Hope this post helps to get you thinking about what you need to do to get started in your teen modeling career and hope you lots of success!!

I dont have the look – Can I Model?

June 30, 2009 by bobpardue

Don’t know how many times I’ve heard this one .. I don’t have the look, can I model? Well, in a word, most likely. If you are not a Cindy Crawford or not 15 years old, you might just be a candidate for commercial modeling.

Males and females are enjoying quite lucrative careers as commercial models from print work to TV ads so you can too, with some work.

It’s a known fact that many successful commercial models look like normal people you’d expect to see driving downtown or walking through the mall.

If they walked past you on the street with normal makeup and dressed casually, you would probably not recognize them as a model.

But, what they do have in their possession is the ability to express body and facial emotions, and the ability to “turn on” or “turn off” at will. As a model photographer, these people are a joy to work with.

Want to be a professional commercial model?

Practice your expressions and body language in the mirror at least 15-20 minutes per day. The poses will begin to come natural to you and pretty soon you are making up new variations and developing a style.

Get a professional model portfolio of pictures and start contacting modeling agents to represent you and you might be on your way to a fun and exciting career as a commercial model. Good Luck!!!!

What is a Fashion Model ?

June 25, 2009 by bobpardue

How can I become a fashion model? A question I’ve been asked more times than I can count. Well, here is a anatomy of what it takes to have a career in fashion modeling.

What is a model?

Wikipedia says this … “

A model (from Middle French modèle) [1] , sometimes called a mannequin, is a person who is employed for the purpose of displaying and promoting fashion clothing or other products and for advertising or promotional purposes or who poses for works of art.

Modeling is distinguished from other types of public performance, such as acting, dancing or mime artistry, although the boundary is not well defined. Appearing in movie or play is generally not considered to be modeling, regardless of the nature of the role. However, models generally have to express emotion in their photographs, and many models have also described themselves as actors. Models are generally not expected to verbally express themselves unless to visually enhance a photograph through the display of intense emotion.”

Now that’s a mouthful!

What is a Fashion Model?

A fashion model normally tunes us in to products such as streetwear, outfits, swim wear and other apparel you’ll find in your favorite department store catalog.

The high end of the fashion modeling industry can land you jobs with Elle or Vogue or one of the many other top magazines but these opportunities are for the elite models.

If you are comfortable walking the runway (maybe you were in pageants when you were younger) and have a nice body type (height is still a plus) then you might be a candidate for becoming a fashion model.

Get some professional photos done, practice, and contact some local or major modeling agencies to see if “you’ve got the look” for being the next fashion model on the scene.

Good Luck!!

Why Commercial Models Practice Facial Expressions

Facial expressions – everybody has ‘em. But, if you are a female commercial model can you give the look for the camera? Some models can but most have to practice daily.

Professional Models Use Emotion to Crank Up Facial Expressions

Actors and actresses know this secret to becoming “believable” in front of the camera. They draw on past a present life experiences to sell a look. You can too!

But first, what are the basic emotions you want to give with your facial expressions? Here are a few …

  • Sadness
  • Surprise
  • Anger
  • Frustration
  • Happiness
  • Jealousy
  • Envy
  • Disgust
  • Contempt
  • Worry
  • Distress
  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Self-respect
  • Optimism
  • Confidence
  • Didn’t know there were so many expressions? Well, it’s time to print out this list and go to the trusty mirror to practice the other side of modeling.

If you plan to become a commercial model, or even start in glamour or fashion, you should practice these facial expressions every day for at least 4 to 6 months. Make them yours so you can bring them up instantly and show the emotion in your eyes.

Do this and you are on your way to becoming a real professional female model!

Thanks much for stopping by and I hope you lots of success!!

How Tall do You Have to be to be a Model?

Glamour Photo by Bob Pardue www.bobpardue.com - All Rights Reserved

How tall do you have to be to be a model? .. A question I am constantly faced with. The answer — It depends. Below you’ll find some different types of female modeling that don’t always require you be tall.

    Commercial Models

These female commercial models are used for advertisements, billboards and for some catalog work. You need an outgoing personality and some acting skills are helpful

    Fitness Models

Just as you would guess, you need to have a body in top shape for modeling fitness. Pay is good but not that glamourous.

    What is a Showroom Model?

These are the models you see modeling outfits for clients in restaurants or higher end department stores. Also good pay but hard work as you’ll be walking the floor most of the day.

    Female Glamour Modeling

This is high paying work but you’ll need to be at least 18 yrs ( I normally suggest you be at least 21 yrs before even considering this type modeling). Glamour models need to be brave souls because they are going to have to take off some, if not all their clothes. Be very careful and know who you are dealing with when pursuing this type model career.

    Artistic Models

Again, 21 is my suggestion. You’ll be fully exposed and most images are done in black and white with artistic lighting.

Can I be a Body Parts Model?

Yes, if you have flawless and beautiful body parts, go for it. This type female modeling is featured for advertising jewelry, hair, shoes, etc. and can be rewarding.

    How Tall is a Model?

As tall as she needs to be. You see here just a few opportunities for a career in female modeling even if you are not a tall girl. Use your imagination and do some homework. You might just find the right place for your attributes in the world of female models.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you lots of successful modeling jobs!

How to Become a Senior Model

    June 9, 2009 by bobpardue

With today’s advertising world trying to capitalize on the baby boomer market it’s no wonder there is starting to be a demand for senior models over 50 years old. If you are retired and need a fun job, mature modeling might be something to consider.

    What is a senior model?

A senior model can be male or female individuals in their 50s, 60s or even older depending upon the type product and can find jobs for catalog, editorial stock, commercial and other types of modling.

Female senior models are typically women are typically between size 2 to 8, and 5’6” to 5’11” in height, attractive (I know you are eye candy) and energetic.

Where to find senior modeling jobs

The best place, of course, is NYC just like fashion models so if you can live in that area, you are ahead of the rest. Many large modeling agencies such as Ford models and others use senior models for clients and they can pay a handsome income to the right mature person.

Find out the guidelines for these agencies and submit your photos to get started. Who knows, you might be the next senior modeling Cindy Crawford!

Best of luck in your mature modeling goals.

How to Become a Female Fitness Model

Fitness Model Photo by Bob Pardue www.bobpardue.com - All Rights Reserved

Fitness Model Photo by Bob Pardue www.bobpardue.com - All Rights Reserved

You bought it in the early spring but can you fit into that new bikini now? To have a great body you don’t have to become a female fitness model but there are some guidelines to follow even if you are not interesting in fitness modeling.

    1. Do you want to look sexy in your bikini?

Almost every woman a girl I’ve shot photos for, no matter what type modeling she does, wants to look great in her bikini. You are probably no exception. It will take some work and maybe even some fitness training.

    2. Personal Trainers

Do you have a personal trainer? If not, this is a positive step to take for getting in shape for modeling or just for the summer.

    3. Diets

Watch your diet and eat good, healthy foods. Green means a lean and mean body so take summer dieting seriously to wear your bikini well.

    4. Purchase (and use) a Good Workout Program to Become a Fitness Model

Most females need toning before taking bikini pictures no matter if they are fitness models or not. So, seriously consider a good, healthy, daily workout program to get you in shape for female modeling.

If you take these steps, the worst that can happen is that you end up with a great body to show off in your new pink bikini at the beach or pool. Go for it.

Final Thought: As with any diet or exercise program, check with your physician to make sure you are healthy enough to start.

    Happy bikini wearing!!

    Working with Hearing Impaired Models

    June 4, 2009 by bobpardue

Someone emailed me today and asked if I had ever worked with hearing impaired or deaf models. I had to answer that personally, I haven’t.

I can see where doing a photo session with a hearing impaired model could be a real challenge. She (my emailer) says that it’s very difficult to read lips normally when the photographer has strobe lights behind him or her so was looking for suggestions.

Her list for communicating with the deaf is here.

I would love to know your thoughts on this matter.

If you are a photographer who has worked with hearing impaired models or maybe you are involved in modeling yourself, help someone else by placing your comments below.

This is certainly a question to ask yourself if you are contemplating becoming a  fashion model or any other type modeling venture. The answer really depends on you.

A Models Role in Beauty Trends

Did you become a model to gain power? Well, in a sense, models do play a role in beauty trends by modeling for fashion and beauty magazines, advertisments for cosmetics, etc.

One thing about beauty trends is that some of them never go away. Let’s face it, we all know that society thinks of thin women as beautiful, and if you are not thin you are certainly not part of that trend which never seems to end.

Of course, beauty trends like these have been known to be superficial and it all has to do with personal taste and preference.

Dont’ be too quick to follow trends in beauty – Lead them!

So the next time you read how pink lipstick is the color to wear this summer, remember that there are still many other colors that will look good on you.

Don’t race out to buy pink lipstick if you don’t fancy yourself in it. Stay true to your own sense of style and you’ll never again have to wonder what they next big beauty trend will be.

I hope this short piece about beauty trends was helpful to you and will guide you next time you want to follow the crowd in fashion, cosmetics or modelng.
