Here is a question I received from an African American female model about applying makeup for the camera and lights I thought you might find interesting.
Hope you will read and add any tips or advice you have in the comments section.
Question:
Hello Bob,
I was reading your article online about makeup application and you said to apply more makeup than you would if you were going out in the evening or through the day.
I was wondering how much more makeup should be applied? Do you have any pictures for samples? For example, one picture showing day or evening makeup contrasted with photo shoot makeup?
Or do you have any video illustrations? I’m african american with very dark skin so if you have any tips for applying makeup for that kind of skin tone please pass that along as well. Thank you.
Answer:
Thank you for writing. I only have a couple of more tips and don’t really have examples as I do model photography and am not a mua.
Foundation should perfectly match the skin tone (i.e. match makeup to your neck and this will make it even-toned instead of having to apply it to face and neck).
If skin is oily, make sure foundation is oil-free
Powder should be as close to color of foundation as possible.
Best to purchase foundation from a knowledgeable salesperson that can help match up the color and even show how it should be applied.
As for how much more, this depends upon skin texture and amount of blemishes, etc. Studio lighting will bring out blemishes if photographed at a side angle so you may need to apply extra to hide them. Can’t really give exacts on this. You’ll need to experiment as camera makeup is an art and each person does it a little differently.
Hope this helps.

How to get rid of acne is on the mind of teen models, male and female just as the skin affliction is on the minds of mainstream America. But, what can you do?
There are many facial lotions and creams you can buy to fight this oily problem but most are packed with chemicals. Natural homemade treatments provide an option for those who want to save money and add to their health.
Remedies
One remedy is to eat healthy foods, get exercise, drink water and wash your face regularly with warm water and soap.
Vitamin deficiency is one cause of acne so eating vegetables that contain vitamin E and A for skin care. You might even take a supplement with these vitamins to help get rid of pimples.
Another, less conventional treatment is to rub a lemon on the afflicted area before bedtime. You can feel the citric acid drying out your acne.
Or, mash up some apples and add four spoons of honey to make a paste for your face. Leave the mixture on for about 10 minutes.
These are just a few homemade acne treatments and you can find many more online. Take care of your skin. If your problems persist, see a doctor or dermatologist to get advice.
The good news is, you don’t have to live with acne and cake tons of concealer on your face and body when you go for modeling pictures. Many times you can clear your skin with a good home remedy!

Have you ever thought about anything other than posing for photographers wearing some high fashion outfit or maybe striking a pose for a skin tight jeans ad? Well, there is a bit more to modeling than walking on a runway or positioning your body for the camera.
Here are a few tips to get you started…
First, be aware there are different types of models. There are males and females and come in all shapes, sizes, colors and range from super young, preteen, teenagers and more mature, even seniors.
The more you know about what you are interested in the more you’ll learn about the facial expressions to give.
For instance, if you are walking the NYC runway, you’ll most likely wear a look according to the type clothing you are featuring, same with catalog. But, if you are one of the women modeling in swimsuits or wearing lingerie for Victoria’s Secret ad, you’ll give a sultry, sexy expression. Get the picture?
With that said, look at magazines and catelogs in your model interest areas and see what looks the girls and guys are giving to draw you in. You’ll discover many are similar and can be learned with a little practice. Give your look in the mirror until you can do it on command.
If you need more help, here are some basic expressions to get you started for your particular career.
Happiness
Sadness
Anger
Frustration
Jealousy / envy
Fear
Disgust
Contempt
Worry
Distress
Anxiety
Sultry
Sexy
Confidence
Optimism
Now you see? If this gets your creative juices going, take out 45 minutes every day to get this down to a science. Then, get your portfolio photos and start contacting agencies. You’ll be ahead of much of the competition who didn’t bother.
Hope you success!!

As you probable already know there are model agencies all over the United States in virtually every state. But, some are more fluent than others. Are there opportunities in Kansas? Certainly, but you have to do a little searching.
Here is one place to look to get started with a Kansas modeling agency
There are many other options to consider though. For instance, how tall are you? If you are 5′9″ or taller you might try Ford or Elite or even IMG. These top agents list models from all over the world but know the requirement needed and be aware that you will be one of the thousands of young teen girls or guys applying. They like to start at around 13 to 15 years old but you might be able to break in at an older age with the right look.
To work locally in KS is possible in the fields of fashion, glamour, commercial or promotional categories. These jobs are open to teens and adults, male and female. The talent listings above might give you a start.
How to get started …
As a beginner, please note that you will need to get together with a good professional local photographer to practice posing for the camera. If you really can’t afford it, at least do these poses in front of a mirror to gain experience and confidence. Once you are comfortable with your poses, get a model portfolio together and start making contacts with some of these KS agents.
I know this is simplified but start with these tips and build on them. Becoming a Kansas model doesn’t happen overnight but it won’t happen at all if you never try. Use every opportunity to get better at the profession and your career might follow.
Good Luck!

Models have to be extra careful to take care of their skin. This is absolutely not the only product to choose as there are many but here’s a quick little review about Aveda.
This American-made beauty line is growing in popularity as time moves forward. Although you may have assumed that Aveda products were solely for hair care, they are actually for total outer beauty. At this point Aveda offers a number of store and full spa locations all around the world. Both women and men utilize these spas for anything from facials, to full body massages, to hair styling, to body waxing, and even tanning procedures.
Regardless of whether you are male or female, Aveda skin care products may be exactly what you are looking for. More recently Aveda has launched a line of hair and skin care products for men. Today’s modern male often likes to look his best.
This means a daily skin care and hair care regimen. One of the best ways to see what all Aveda has to offer is by accessing their online store. While it can be helpful to reside near an Aveda store of spa, so that you can ask questions and acquire free samples of shampoos, moisturizers, conditioners, and body scrubs, any of their products can additionally be ordered online with ease. You may even be able to save some money on tax this way.
If you already know your skin type, then you should begin browsing their official website for Aveda skin care products that best suit your needs. If you are uncertain, you can always call Aveda directly or email them with questions or concerns. This way you can receive recommendations regarding what products that might be suitable for your skin type and hair. There is likely to be a guarantee grace period, which allows you to send the skin care products back if they are not suitable for you.
If you are fortunate to reside close to an Aveda outlet or salon, proceed to visit them in person to learn more about Aveda skin care products and spa treatments. You may decide you are in the mood for a little pampering. Speak with a professional about your skin concerns and issues. He or she can them offer you some Aveda samples and make a few recommendations regarding your skin care.
After all, the more you know, the better you can care for your skin and hair. Taking care daily is essential with any type of skincare so don’t skip days.. expecially if you are a couple of days away from a modeling photo shoot with your favorite photographer. d:-)
Come back soon …

It’s not uncommon for teenagers or adults to find the modeling profession fascinating. As a photographer, I find it amazing too! But, what if you don’t live in or near major cities like New York, Chicago or Los Angeles? What if you are in the southern state of Missouri? Can you still locate an agent?
Sure you can. There are modeling opportunities for teens, male and female in MO if you take some time to search online. Cities like Kansas City or Springfield sport agencies who handle local talent.
Now, with that said, you probable won’t see Elite or Ford listed here. But, that’s another story. Even if you are not applying to the companies on top of the list, you’ll need to know the requirements with answers to questions suchas “How tall do I need to be?” or “What are a female model’s measurements?” or even; “Will I have to be one of those women modeling in swimsuits?”. These are valid questions and many of the answers are on my website but, for now, just be informed that they are important when finding Missouri modeling agencies.
Practice by posing for model photographers in your area. You’ll find many talented people who know how to do modeling pictures. If you cannot afford to hire a professional photographer, practice poses in the mirror or have a friend snap some photos just to get an idea of how you are going to pose for your portfolio.
Get your portfolio together. Make sure you use a profesisonal photography company for these photos. Give yourself the best chance for success by having great pictures. You can use the photos to form a book or have comp cards made to leave with the Missouri modeling agencies you contact. The composite cards are cheap and can be easily ordered online.
Once you know the requirements and have taken the steps above, check some MO agents to find dates for open calls. Not all offer this service but many do. Dress and act professional in your interview. Don’t wear skin tight jeans or sweaters with revealing necklines. The agent is interested in how you look, not what you can show.
Take someone with you and, if you are under 18, keep your parents informed and involved in every step you take for safety reasons.
Have fun and start your modeling career by locating some managers in MO.

The last thing you want when you get ready for your teenage model photo shoot is to look in the mirror and see a pimple. I know, Photoshop works wonders but you want a great complexion if you plan to do any type beauty modeling, or even fashion. What are the best treatment options?
Don’t pop it! You heard this at about 14 or 15 years old. Well, the truth is Mom was correct. It is not a prudent choice to pop pimples and hope they heal up and go away.
This can not only often make them worse, but it can cause scarring as well. So instead of pinching, poking, prodding and popping, you should seek out the best acne medication for your skin type and condition.
Allow the blemish cream or acne toner to do the work for you. Not only will these help clear up your complexion, but they can additionally aid with preventing new whiteheads and blackheads from forming.
Before Your Portfolio Photo Session, Get Your Medication
Where do you go to find the best acne medication and treatments currently available? The truth is there are several routes to take when it comes to clearing up your skin.
One method is to visit a licensed dermatologist and see what he or she recommends for your skin. More than likely they will tell you what type of acne you have and then suggest a prescription medication.
Although these are generally topical, they may even prescribe you an oral medication to control your hormones and oil production from the inside. These are often quite effective.
If you take some time to look online, you will notice a lot of websites claiming to offer the best acne medication. Probably the most notable one at this point is Proactiv Solution.
This company has sold millions of acne treatment kits and products to individuals all over the globe. They now have an excellent reputation for being effective in treating and preventing acne breakouts. If you take a peek at their official website, you will notice that a started kit can be purchased.
Local drugstores offer all sorts of over-the-counter acne blemish solutions. As far as the best acne medication or cream goes, this generally depends on the person. For example, maybe you prefer a topical medication with the drying agent benzyl peroxide, or you may also like toning aids that contain salicylic acid.
While the first ingredient aims to dry out blemishes, the second component is an exfoliant that aims to clear away dead skin cells and allow the pores to breath. While both can effectively assist with clearing up blemishes like whiteheads and blackheads, you have to decide for yourself which one is the best acne medication for you and your skin type. Some of these products can irritate certain individuals, while others are milder.
The key is to try out a few different topical creams and gels, and then decide which one is working for you. There are also acne cleansers to give a shot.
My final thought for teen models is to eat healthy to have that radient and beautiful skin. Eat fruits like apples, plenty of vegetables and exercise daily. These are wonderful deterents.
Hope you found this helpful. I’ll see you in front of my camera soon!

When Jackie arrived at my studio in SC, I knew she had a special look but I had no idea she would be able to pull off posing like a model in her just for fun photo shoot. Jackie is from North Carolina and has no desire to get involved in glamour or fashion modeling but you’d never know it from her pictures.
Amateur and posing for photographers for the fun of it has become a favorite pastime for women and girls in the Carolina area. The sessions are set up complete with makeup, studio lighting, professional cameras and to add a “magazine” look come complete with professional retouching and air brushing wherever skin is showing.
Bob Pardue Photography is well known in the modeling world and has a knack for making his models feel relaxed so they have lots of fun during these photo shoots.
The picture listed here is just one example of how beautiful Jackie looked when the final images were presented. She was as shocked as I was at the amazing results.

Hope you enjoyed the amateur fashion photos of this (not) female model from North Carolina and I hope you come back to see us real soon. You can book your photo session before Christmas for you or for him if you hurry. Studio time is always limited but worth the wait.

As a female model portfolio photographer I constantly do photo shoots with girls and women who are into glamour, figure or fitness modeling. I am aware that most people in entertainment do not eat what they should and go on crash diets to develop that curvy body needed for glamour shots.
Remember, you can find more female diet tips for models by going here now …
To refresh your memory of one of my other blog posts, a female glamour model is normally somewhere around: bust or bra size of 34-D, hips around 34 to 35 inches and a slim waist size of about 24 to 25″ .
So, how do you create a balance between starviing yourself and having the figure needed to becoming a model? Don’t panic! Along with the proper rest and a good fitness exercise program, here are 10 healthy foods to help you on your way to good nutrition habits.
1. Blueberries and Apples for Vitamin C – It’s true that an apple a day will help keep the doctor away but eating them along with other nutritional intake will not keep photographers away! Nope, women who are glamour models will be posing in swimsuits and landing some of those great jobs for fashion if you practice your other modeling skills.
2. Broccoli – Just an all around healthy food product which is good for you. It is especially helpful in preventing some heart disease and dibetes (always check with your doctor about results).
3. Almonds – You love ‘em anyhow so why not make these delicious nuts a part of your regular diet to add vitamin A or C?
4. Fish – These water dewllers, especially salmon, has omega-3 fatty acids, filled with protein and good for your cardiovascular system. This food has benefits for a model’s nails, skin and hair which are vitally important in glamour, fashion, figure or any other type modeling. You’ll be swimming upstream during your next figure model photo session. Your photographer will love your new energy levels.
5. Vegetable Juice – “Could have had a….”, well, you know the rest of the sloagon. Veggies are nutritions and rich with nutrients and vitamins. Steamed vegetables are normally best to get the maximum nutrition.
6. Full of Beans – Yep, the misunderstood, underpublisized bean! Filled with protein and fiber, this simple food is low in fat and cholesterol. A worthy meal for dieting models and has many health benefits as well.
These are just six of the basic diet suggestions for female models. You can find many more and get nutrition while working on that “perfect 10″ body to pose for glamour modeling jobs. Diet is extremely important for figure or fitness models as well. No matter what your profession, get in shape before you get in front of the camera. Your photographer will thank you when he or she looks through the lens.
Hope you enjoyed this piece about foods for nutrition and will bookmark me to return often for more modeling tips.
Best,

If there is one thing I know as a professional model portfolio photographer, it’s that there are thousands of teenagers who want to get started as models. They want to be on the top list with mega star agencies like IMG, Ford or Elite. Unfortunatly, most teens will never make the cut. Harsh but true.
Know Why?
Many never get started because of unrealistic dreams. For instance, if you are 5′0″ you are most likely not going to walk the Milan runway in top list designer fashion outfits. This is just a fact of the business. All these models are almost exclusively 5′9″ or taller.
So, the first tip is to know the requirements for the type modeling you want to do. Now, before you get upset and run to your room crying, there is still hope if you are not tall enough for catwalk modeling. Here are a few areas for teens …
Beauty and Cosmetics: If you have a beautiful face with a pure complexion and good teeth, consider applying for these jobs.
Catalog: There are some local opportunities (especially in the larger cities) for modeling clothing, swimwear or even underwear. Apply for plus size, regular or petite teen modeling (check for sizes needed, etc.)
Teenagers as Commercial Models: This is a wide field and accepts all ages, ethnic background (you can even be Itallian or Russian ), shapes and heights. Requirements include being outgoing and having abilities to give a variety of expressions and posing positions for the camera. Practice in the mirror until you develop your own style and then contact agents in your area.
Glamour: These jobs are not recommended for teen girls or boys. If offered, have your mom or dad check them out and decide if the shoot is age – appropriate for you.
This is just a partial list of opportunities for teenagers to get started as models. Read these tips again and take one step at a time. Rehearse to become professional before you ever pose for a snapshot. Write your goals down and look at them daily.
*** Be sure to keep your mom or dad involved in every contact and never go alone to open calls for modeling jobs or photo shoots.
If you are willing to be versatile, you might be posing for photographers in a studio near you soon!
Now, go and be a teen model …

Ever wondered if you could become a female model or maybe find work in other areas of the entertainment business? Well, there are some opportunities for Boston teenagers, men and women who want to become models.
If you live in Massachusetts here are some things to do.
Important – go here to check out modeling for teenage and female models at agencies in Massachusetts
What are the requirements?
If you go next door to New York you can apply to the agents on the top of the list such as Elite, IMG or maybe Ford Management. But, the requirement is brutal and the competition is worse. You need to be …
-between 13 to 21
- 5′9″ or taller
- smile with straight teeth
- great hair
-flawless complexion
…to name a few.
However, if you don’t meed all these standards you can go local. Most large Massachusetts cities like Boston hosts an impressive amount of modeling agencies for teens, adults, male, female and children.
You can work in the areas of fashion or runway. Also, don’t forget to keep commercial, glamour or figure / artistic in your thoughts as you choose your career in the arts.
You don’t always need to be tall if you get into commercial work.
Some glamour photo jobs exist too (if you have a curvy figure ) but be prepared to show skin if you try this. You’ll be modeling in swimsuits or less.
Even plus size models can find an agency in MA to represent them with a little persistence. Remember, there is more than one type model so find your niche in the industry and go for your dreams. Practice your craft, get in shape, get your picture portfolio together and start contacting some of these Massachusetts modeling agency representatives to go for your dream.
Hope to see you on the cover!

Simplified – Eat plenty of fatty foods and become a plus size model. Eat healthy and get plenty of exersize, grow taller and work for top list agencies like Elite or Ford. As does IMG, these agents look for tall ( 5′9″ or taller) and slim girls with perfect hair, teeth and complexion.
I know your height can’t be changed (if you are not tall, try commercial modeling ) but you can change your diet which will help your figure, hair and complexion so you don’t have to use excessive cosmetics during model photo shoots.
Not much more to say except stay healthy, keep tabs on your weight, practice your poses and become a teenage model.
Hope you success!!

Are you dreaming about becoming a teenage model? If so, then you should know the requirements for males and females.
For reference, here is a listing of Maryland agencies for teenage and adult models .
Now, if you plan to go bigtime with agents like Elite or maybe Ford, you’ll need to be 5′9″ or taller if you are female and 6′0″ or taller for males. These top list companies are located in the big cities and you’ll most likely have to travel if accepted.
But, for Maryland model hopefuls, there are local talent agencies to check with and some are very good at finding work for teenagers and adults.
Requirements? It depends upon the type modeling you are looking for. Runway models still need to be tall but there are other opportunities in MD such as catalog, glamour or commercial.
When you put together your portfolio of pictures for MD agents, be sure to include headshots, full body in tight clothing such as a sweater and jeans ( women might want to do swimsuit photos ), 3/4 length, etc.
Be sure to include at least one headshot photo with little or no makeup so the agent or manager can tell more about your complexion.
So, no matter if you live in Baltimore, Maryland or NYC you can work in the modeling industry with some practice, good professional pictures and some tenacity in making contacts with some top list MD agencies.
Good luck in your quest for a dream job!

As a professional model photographer, I am constantly faced with teens and female adults who come in for a portfolio session with no idea of how to present themselves in front of my camera.
That’s okay because I am always willing to help them to get into position and give their best expression. But, it’s wonderful when a girl comes in and knows her stuff.
Here are some tips on how you can be that girl or woman who poses for me during a Carolina model portfolio shoot .
Top List Model or Maybe Local?
Are you interested in becoming a top model or maybe just do some jobs for a local clothing catalog? Did you know that you can take classes that teach modeling poses for photographers so that you can be spectacular on the set.
If you are female model looking for a job, you need to make sure that you know what a photographer is looking for before he snaps your picture, so that you can continuously have an edge on getting booked.
The best thing about learning how to pose in a photography session is that you can learn the correct poses no matter what type of modeling you plan to do – i.e. glamour, fashion, artistic, figure, commercial, runway or fitness… there is a long listing of employment opportunities.
Male or Female – Adult or Teenager
If you are a male model there are different poses that you will need to know, as opposed to being a female model. The modeling positions and expressions that teenagers need to know are much different from those of older or mature models.
If you are a teenager wanting to go into modeling as a career choice, it is important to take all the tips you can from the classes you may take or from the other models that you will work with.
Depending on the company the poses you need to learn or the photography itself may change, therefore it is important to know all poses so that you can continuously work as a model.
Hope this helps and hope to see you in front of my camera one day!

A young lady from California asked this question about starting an alternative career. I don’t have all the answers so I welcome your comments.
Question
|
What are the prospects for the Sacramento, California market as far as modeling? I am not a stereotypical model type. I am only 5′5″ and about 100 lbs. I have no experience, but I think it would be an opportunity for myself to be an alternative model. What is your professional opinion as to how I would begin this venture?
|
Hi,
Wish I could answer this but I am in South Carolina and not an agent. I think you have the right idea to look into commercial modeling if you have an outgoing personality and can give expressions easily for the camera. The other steps are the same as for other types of modeling - Practice daily and make agency contacts.
Hope you lots of success!

An excellent question! Are the female models you see posted on the covers of top list magazines like Glamour or Vogue beautiful? Of course they are. How about the one’s represented by the major modeling agencies like IMG or Ford or Elite? The answer is yes again.
But, what many young women don’t realize is that not every model has that striking beauty or has a perfect 10 when it comes to her figure. Not all have a flawless face or features to turn every eye in the room.
What type modeling jobs are available for females who don’t meet the requirements above but still want to pose for the photographer’s camera?
Well, one I can think of is commercial. This is modeling for advertisers looking to sell a certain product or maybe looking for female models to pose for an editorial story in a magazine or newspaper.
An example: If a company wants to promote water skiis or other sports equipment, they need a model with an athletic build, unlike the girls walking the NY runway with super thin physiques.
If the product is a medical solution for arthritis in seniors, they would not need teenagers to do the modeling for these pictures. Get the, yea, uh … picture?
So, don’t be discouraged if you want to get into entertainment but don’t have a perfect face or figure. Look for opportunities in commercial modeling, practice facial expressions, and start looking for an agent to pursue your dream. You’ll be doing poses for photographers in this industry before you know it!

Another in my Q&A series is a simple question but, if you are spending a ton of money hiring a professional model photographer you’ll want to make sure you fill the requiements and get the pictures you need to submit to top list or local modeling agencies.
What do I need in a model portfolio?
Well first, let me ask you a question; What type modeling are you planning to do? Fashion? Glamour? Runway? Commercial?
This will help determing the type photography you’ll want to pose for and set the stage for your niche in the industry.
For instance, if you plan to go straight to the heavy hitters like Elite or IMG, you might just need a good headshot and full body to submit. The portfolio will come after you’re accepted. Ford and the others follow about the same rules.
But, for local talent agents you’ll need a complete portfolio, or most likely comp cards to leave when you make your contacts.
With that said, I’ll give you some general requirements and you can tweak them to your particular interests.
1. Headshots – At least a couple of good closeup photos to show your facial features, smile, teeth and complexion. I suggest one straight on without makeup (or very little) so the agency can see if you have major blemishes, etc.
2. Full Body Photography – A few pictures showing from head to toe. Try to do poses that accentuate your figure and at least one should be in tight fitting clothes or maybe swimsuit modeling poses for women or men.
3. 3/4 Length – Also, a few of these shots. These poses are normally either start at the waist or thighs to show a closer look than the full length. Show off your expressions in these as you would in headshots.
It’s not difficult to produce these requirements for portfolios. You should end up with somewhere between 8 to 20 pictures in your modeling portfolio.
Submit only your best work!!
I can’t stress this enough! Six fantastic pictures are worth more than 20 mediocre ones. If it’s borderline, throw it out! Besides, the modleing agencies don’t have time to sort through page after page of bad photos just to find a few good ones.
Now that you know what you need in a model portfolio, find a good professional photographer who’ll help with your posing ideas, get your photos and make agency contacts. You’re on your way to a career!
Success!
