More than a Female Fashion Model

By bobpardue

Here is a question submitted by Laura who is contemplating which type model she wants to become. I hope you will help her in the quest to become a female model.

Question:

Hey Bob, how are you ?

I’m just glad Christmas vacation is almost here… lolz…

I would like to know if i can become more than one type of model because I want to do the commercial print type of modeling and the fashion print type of modeling.

I’ve even thought about trying to walk the runway.  (I am really tall in heels)

… So can i be 2-3 types?

Possible Answer:

Hi Laura,

It is possible to cross boundries and become more than one type model but you have to make a decision of whether to “be all things to all people” or to specialize.

For example: I am a model portfolio photographer and a stock photographer. This works out because the two compliment each other.

I have found many female models to help with my teen lifestyle stock photography by creating their portfolios. But, I try not to mix these up front. When talking to a model about a portfolio I don’t generally mention the stock because I am only there to create her pictures at the time.

Now, when it comes to commercial or high fashion modeling; these may or may not work together. The rules are a bit different.

For high fashion you must be 5′9″ to 5′11″ (without heels) with a dress size between 4 and 8. There are a few execptions but not many.

For promotional and commercial work, agencies want people with good faces and high energy.

Although it’s possible to have both attributes, one or the other usually stands out stronger.

So Laura, my suggestion is to use your strong points first and then, if you (or your agent) feel you have the look and talent, you can maybe expand into other areas.

Hope this helps and I wish you lots of success no matter what you choose!

Bob
