Sadly, this is a situation I see frequently and thought I’d address it one more time on the blog.
Sequence:
– Young girl gets chosen in the mall
– Girl goes to open call for model agency representation
– She gets called back for an interview
– She is asked to put up an astounding amount of money for listing, pictures, portfolio comp cards, etc.
Here’s the latest story …
I have a question about the last modeling open call / interview I went to.
At the end I was chosen to come back but then they mentioned a $4000 fee for the comp cards and the portfolio so my mom thought it was a scam because we had to pay.
Do you think it was and another thing is they said they had discovered many models but many I never even heard of.
I’m confused because I went to many different websites looking up common scams of talent agencies and one site stated they will have upfount fees but I still don’t know if that was a scam.
Honestly, I would have gotten scamed because I believed all of it.
Don’t Do It!
This is not an exact science but my guess would be that any amount of $1000 or more for photos puts up a red flag to proceed carefully.
Also, you can ask if you can just find your own photographer to do your portfolio. Most agents will allow this and you can certainly find a really good professional to create your images for a reasonable rate.
** Please take into consideration I’m not talking about legitimate agents who charge a small fee for photos or the supermodel management companies like Ford, IMG or Elite. These should be fine if you are accepted and they don’t normally spend a lot of time in the malls looking for models.
Teenagers including male and female are many times the target so be cautious if you are approached. This is not usually the fast route to becoming the next top list model. Take the slow road to success and avoid the scams.
Children (or should I say the parents) can also be the victims as everyone believes their baby or toddler can be a modle because they are so cute. Of course they are but not all are working in entertainment.
Do a search for model portfolio photographer in your state to find some listings. Check references if needed and look at their work to make sure it matches your style of modeling. This should get you started.
One final thought. You can do a search for other modeling agents listed by US state here .
I don’t personally endorse these so you need to check them out before applying. If contacting by phone or email, ask if they charge upfront fees to avoid scams.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Bob Pardue, female model portfolio photographer

If you visit New York, Los Angeles or Miami you’ll find plenty of agents and management companies such as IMG or Ford.
But, in your search don’t forget the other “big guys” such as Elite Modeling Agency. This company is still hot and on the top list in my opinion. Here’s why ..
This agent has plenty of muscle and history representing, to name a few, supermodels Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum and America’s Next Top Model Tyra Banks, a favorite among teenagers.
Now, don’t get me wrong, they do NOT choose everyone! To phrase a pun, you have to be one of the elite to sign with them.
They only pick a few girls and guys from literally thousands of applicants so, if you are lucky enough to get a modeling job with them, you’re well on your way to a lucrative career in entertainment.
Now, just suspose this prestegious giant doesn’t choose you to walk the fashion runway or put you in the next glamour catalog? Should you give up on the profession? Absolutely not!
You can still work in the industry with another top agent and remember that most of the super models did not get accepted right away!
CLICK HERE FOR IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT OTHER TOP LIST MODELING AGENCIES
And, if you simply cannot find work with one of these, then there’s always local work in catalog, commercial or maybe even promotional. Don’t give up!
If you really want to find a talent scout, go to open calls and do your best to gain employment.
Success to you!

Someone emailed me today and asked if I had ever worked with hearing impaired or deaf models. I had to answer that personally, I haven’t.
I can see where doing a photo session with a hearing impaired model could be a real challenge. She (my emailer) says that it’s very difficult to read lips normally when the photographer has strobe lights behind him or her so was looking for suggestions.
Her list for communicating with the deaf is here.
I would love to know your thoughts on this matter.
If you are a photographer who has worked with hearing impaired models or maybe you are involved in modeling yourself, help someone else by placing your comments below.
Thanks and Success!!

This is certainly a question to ask yourself if you are contemplating becoming a fashion model or any other type modeling venture. The answer really depends on you.
When setting your goals in modling, decide if you want this to be a full or part time career.
Whatever your particular interest in fashion modeling, be determined to reach your goals. You will face many rejections, so be very persistent and Never Quit.
Modeling for fun or profit?
Also, if you want to be a fashion model just for fun or to make an income. Be comfortable when you set these limits. If you plan to go big time, then you’ll want to reach the big guys like Ford or Elite . Be sure to read their guidelines for height and body types first.
If you plan to get into modeling locally, check online for local model agents to get started. You might just get your feet wet and then decide to become the next top fashion model in America. Who knows?
Good luck and I hope you lots of success!

Most girls think of modeling as being in a fashion show or walking the runway, which is fine if you are 5′ 10′ and skinny as a rail.
But, most females do not fit into that category. So, what to do?
Enter: Commercial Print Modeling
What is Commercial Print Modeling?
In a word, think of commercial print modeling as a television advertisement in print. The magazine industry uses commercial models as part of their total package.
These commercial models are seen in store catalogs, magazines, editorial stories, newspapers, brochures, on posters for sale, billboards, on the tops of taxis, in store displays, and many other areas not mentioned here.
Are You the Commercial Model Type?
Now, before you shrug off this type of modeling to become that super model in the fashion world take a look at the physical requirements.
If you are looking for a chance at becoming a fashion model you must have those physical attributes mentioned above.
In contrast, Commercial models are put in lifestyle situations and need to be able to present themselves as “natural”. In other words your body language, facial expressions and interaction with the environment are important.
Commercial models are a melting pot of different heights, weights, dress sizes, ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds.
So, if you don’t fit the runway model “mold”, don’t give up. You might be America’s next commercial print model !!
Success to you!

Do they go hand and hand? I mean modeling and eyecare tips. In a way, yes they do. Applying makeup and taking care of your eyes will give your poor photographer a better face to work with so you want to “manage” your eyes, lips and skin.
I’ve put together a section of eyecare tips to help you become more beautiful and more photogenic for your next session.
Enjoy!!!

I have written many articles and ezine inserts about how to find and market yourself to the “big guys”, namely the NYC modeling agencies. And, I still feel this is the way to go if you plan to be the next top model like Tyra or Cindy.
With that said, here is a different twist with a question from a model who does not want to move to New York in order to get into modeling. A valid question so I’ll try to answer below …
From the Model:
I’m sorry but I cannot go to New York City where all the other Fashion Models and other people are there but I’m definetely stuck here in Utah forever.
I’d probably should lose this whole Modeling Career and start a new one, I think.
And these certainly are my concerns of failing my dreams.
Do you know if there are any other ways to get contact of one of the modeling agents and agencies, please, all I need is help with my Modeling Career or maybe I can just wait until I’m done with my school and everything. Then maybe someday again I can get with you guys, hopefully sooner or later.
Yes, I’ll find Model agents, I’ll find good pictures of myself and how does the picture have to be or look like, exactly HOW?
I can understand how things are working out on my Modeling Career but still trying to finish it through with all your informations and your help.
Answer:
Claudia,
As for pictures, you’ll want a good variety of looks and outfits. Your model portfolio photographer should be able to help you with this.
Or, you can contact many agencies with just snapshots although the professional photos look best.
In your 2nd email, you made a statement about traveling to NY. You can also find local agencies and maybe find work part time while finishing school ( I highly reccommend you finish).
This will help you improve your skills and let you see what modeling is all about.
Hope this helps.
P.S. Many of these questions are answered in my
online book of modeling which you can read free when you subscribe to my newsletter. d:-)
Best,
Bob

This is another of the many questions I get from aspiring young models. Read the question and answer below. I’d appreciate your input on this as well. – Bob
Hi bob ,
I really dont know were to start, i have had modeling in mind for a while now but im not sure its something that i want to do for a living.
Your advice is a great help towards something im looking forward to doing.
What is the best age to start looking into all of this im 13 i feel like im way to young.
I want to do this for the fun of it and i think it would be a good experience and for the future. can you help me.
Lauren
Hi Lauren,
In modeling, age is relative. Depending upon the type, there are models from newborn to 90 yrs.
Only you and your parents can make the decision of when to start. In the meantime, read all you can, practice every day, and keep your mom or dad involved in every aspect.
Hope this helps.

The following article presents the very latest information on commercial print modeling. If you have a particular interest in becoming a commercial model, then this informative article is required reading.
Is it wise to consider Commercial Print Modeling Agencies?
Read this advertisement seen in a trade magazine:
“Prestigious company looking for professional commercial models. Modeling rates according to experience. Call 555-0011.”
You’ll find ads like this on scattered throughout magazines and online. Many female models believe the only jobs available are the height oriented high fashion and runway opportunities.
Not True!!!!
In fact, you’ll find many types of modeling jobs besides the two mentioned above. One of these career choices involves commercial model jobs. This type career is an absolute gold mine for many girls
Commercial Print Modeling Is …
In a nutshell, commercial print modeling is similar to TV as you are normally selling a product or service.
Magazines hire commercial models to complete issues or human interest stories, etc. These models can be seen in clothing or product catalogs, trade magazines, used as illustrations in editorial columns, newspapers, travel and corporate brochures, on posters, etc, etc, etc
So, you see, there may be life after runway modeling after all!! If you are interested in pursuing a career in commercial modeling, do some checking online and with your local talent agency to see where you fit in. You might just find a lucrative job you love!!

Model is Crystal
A question about price… Is the price of a modeling portfolio as important as the results? Well, yes and no. It depends upon what you consider a bargain. We live in a price oriented world today and having model pictures done is no exception.
Are you really concerned about price or cost? The difference is that you can find products and services cheap but will they last or be what you expected? If you have to do it over the cost is greater than the more expensive one to begin with!
With that said, here is the question and my suggestions about the price of a model portfolio …
Hi,
I really love your newsletters and enjoy reading them! I had a question that I was hoping you may be able to help me with. I recently answered an open call about a photographer who neededs models to update his photography website.
I met with the photographer and he seemed nice and helpful. However, my look is not what he is looking for his promotion but he said he wants to help me build a portfolio for a discount price because he thinks I have the model look and that I can go somewhere.
I looked at his work and I really liked his style.
Do you think 4 looks for $200 and then composite cards for $2 each is a good deal or am I being ripped off?
Please let me know.
Thanks!
Arpita
Thanks for reading the newsletters and I hope they will help in your career.
Photography rates are a touchy subject. There are so many factors involved such as
- area or state
- what’s included such as makeup artist or hair stylist
- number of looks (outfits, hair, makeup)
- number of photos
- delivery method.. CD, prints or both
- number of images retouched
- usage rights (be sure you are able to use images for promotion in print and on the web)
and on and on.
So, to really sidestep your question, price is many times irrelevent.
When I do a portfolio session, my rates are higher than the $200 but I only shoot one session per day. We do the makeup and take whatever time is necessary to make sure the model gets the images he or she needs for the portfolio. Then, all images are retouched and airbrushed for a “magazine” look.
This is the only way we can offer a 100% guarantee. The model doesn’t feel rushed and has a lot of fun and the pictures reflect that.
Please consider all these factors before choosing a photographer and ask lots of questions.
Then, if you like the style and results from this particular model photographer set your appointment and don’t worry too much about price as long as it’s reasonable and within your budget.
Hope this helps!

This article shows the uses for, pros and cons of buying cosmetic organizers and I hope it will help you in making decisions about storing your makeup.
The heartbreak of the “window sill” makeup holder
This is very disheartning because every time someone opens the window, or when someone pulls the blind all that valuable makeup falls to the floor.
Young women everywhere are becoming more and more frustrated by the lack of organization here.
Keeping all your cosmetics hidden away in a makeup bag is not convenient. What do you do? One answer is to think about getting cosmetic organizers to keep all your beauty products together.
One challenge many young women have had with cosmetic organizers in the past is that they seldom use them after they are purchased. She buys the organizer, carefully places all her makeup in the determined spots, but there is always something about it that causes it to be unusable.

I believe you will have more beautiful hair by reading this article and you will find lots of modeling, cosmetics and fashion articles on the website too!
Professional Haircare to Enhance Your Beauty
The best course of action to take sometimes is not at all clear until you have thought about and considered your alternatives. The following paragraphs should help clue you in to what the hair design experts think is significant.
With so many new hairstyles today, women and men alike need professional haircare products that will keep their hair looking beautiful all day every day. There are so many products on the market such as shampoos, conditioners, gels, hairsprays, hair waxes, anti-frizz treatments, perms, and more. So, how do you choose which is right for your hair? Here are some tips to get you started.
Shampoo and Conditioner
Some well-known brand name manufacturers that carry professional haircare products include ABBA, L’oreal, BioSilk, AVEDA, ARTec, Murad, Nioxin, Pureology, American Crew, and Alterna.
A variety of shampoos and conditioners are available to help dry hair, thin hair, colored hair, permed hair, African-American hair – you name it! Some of the categories you might find include volumizing, refining, moisturizing, reconstructing, and purifying.
